Tips to help you avoid the Divorce Solicitor Trap
• Agree a fixed fee.
Ask your solicitor to put the agreement in writing, specifying clearly the full extent of the service and what elements if any are excluded (e.g. court disbursements etc.)
• Give clear instructions. Ambiguity leads to exploitation
• Establish a policy for correspondence. If you do not want your solicitor to acknowledge correspondence or respond without authorisation from you, specify this in writing or by email
• Establish a clear framework for negotiation. Clarify objectives and don't move the goal posts
• Do not allow emotional issues to cloud the facts. Avoid using your solicitor as a source of emotional support
• Obtain sound financial advice from a disinterested professional. Try your accountant or bank manager
