Ten things
You should
Never say
To your solicitor
Or ten things your solicitor would like to hear
1) Would you like me to put that in writing?
Because he can charge you for reading it, then (without too much effort) for re-compiling it and sending it over to the other side
2) What do you think the court would say about this?
Because the court wants you, the parties, to decide anyway – so the best decision from their perspective is the one you are both happy with.
3) Can you give me a breakdown of that invoice?
Because the breakdown will be so complicated that you’ll be even more confused by the time you‘ve read it.
4) I don’t remember calling you at that time/on that day
Because that implies that you have not been keeping a log of calls
5) Is there any way we can keep this correspondence down to a minimum?
Because this suggests that you have handed over control of the situation to your solicitor and are reliant upon his/her judgement.
6) Would you prefer me to come into the office?
Because this entails a higher charge out rate.
7) What is your opinion of these figures?
Because your solicitor is usually not also an accountant.
8) I have to make him/her see sense
Because if you expect your solicitor to fight your battles, then you can expect to pay for it.
9) Can you recommend a barrister?
Because you probably don’t need one – unless you are grappling with millions of pounds worth of assets and a fraudulent spouse.
10) What do you think of this financial settlement I have arranged with my spouse?
Because your solicitor is likely to say that he can get you a better deal – which leads you into
